I grabbed a Pro subscription the moment it dropped and put Fable 5 through 12 hours of real work — from building a React full-stack app to reviewing a 40-page contract. Here’s the verdict upfront: this is Anthropic’s strongest and boldest launch yet. The model shipped June 9, and it’s the first time Anthropic has opened Mythos-tier capability to everyone.

What Is Claude Fable 5?

Claude Fable 5 is Anthropic’s fifth-generation flagship model, belonging to a new Mythos tier — a capability level above the Opus family. It shares the exact same underlying model as Claude Mythos 5. The only difference is the safety guardrails:

  • Fable 5: Available to everyone. Has safety classifiers for cybersecurity and biology/chemistry topics. Sensitive requests automatically fall back to Opus 4.8. See Claude Fable product page

The name has a nice backstory — “Fable” comes from the Latin fabula (“a story told”), sharing roots with the Greek mythos. Same model, two access modes.

Fable 5 costs half of what Mythos Preview charges — both input and output. It is more expensive than Opus 4.8 ($5/$25), but for a Mythos-tier model, the premium is completely fair. Anthropic’s pricing message is clear: Mythos-level capability costs more than last-gen flagships, but far less than its Mythos-tier peers.

On the subscription side, Pro/Max/Team/Enterprise plans get Fable 5 for free until June 22. After that, it shifts to usage credits. Anthropic says they’ll bring Fable 5 back into standard subscription plans as soon as capacity allows.

Performance: Outpacing Opus 4.8 Across the Board

Fable 5 sets new best scores on nearly every benchmark. From Anthropic’s published comparisons, here’s where the gains are biggest:

Software Engineering

Stripe’s early testing reports that Fable 5 “compressed months of engineering into days” — it completed a code migration in a single day that would have taken a team over two months to do manually, inside a 50-million-line Ruby codebase.

On Cognition’s FrontierCode benchmark (which tests whether models can solve hard coding tasks at production-quality standards), Fable 5 scored the highest among all frontier models, even at a medium compute budget.

What really stuck with me was the demo video: Fable 5 beat Pokémon FireRed using nothing but raw game screenshots — no maps, no navigation aids, no extra tooling. Previous Claude models needed complex scaffolding to play this game. Fable 5 just looked at the screen and figured it out.

Vision

Fable 5 is the new king of vision tasks. It can extract precise numbers from dense scientific charts. It can reconstruct web app source code from screenshots. The most impressive demo: it wrote code to create a fluid simulation synced to a classical music beat — and Fable 5 had never “heard” music before that moment.

Long Context & Memory

Fable 5 holds focus across millions of tokens and actively uses its own notes to improve later outputs. In a Slay the Spire play test, giving Fable 5 persistent file memory improved its performance 3× more than the same boost helped Opus 4.8. Fable 5 also reached the final act 3× more often.

Claude Mythos 5: Restricted but Stronger

Mythos 5 is Fable 5 without the cybersecurity guardrail, currently limited to Project Glasswing partners and select biomedical institutions. Here’s where it has exclusive advantages:

  • Drug design: Accelerated protein design workflows 10×. Out of 14 protein targets, 9 yielded strong candidate molecules — now under further research.
  • Molecular biology: The first Anthropic model to consistently produce novel, credible scientific hypotheses. In blind comparisons, scientists preferred Mythos 5’s hypotheses over Opus-tier models 80% of the time.
  • Genomics: Autonomously completed single-cell data integration, ML model design, and training over a week. Its output outperformed a recent model published in Science — while using only 1% of the parameters.

Anthropic’s data shows over 95% of Fable 5 sessions never trigger a fallback — for those users, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 feel nearly identical.

In external red-teaming, Fable 5’s safety classifiers survived over 1,000 hours of bug bounty testing with no universal jailbreak found. UK AISI’s preliminary tests have also not yet discovered universal jailbreaks on long-running agentic tasks.

Biology & Chemistry Classifier

Fable 5 also falls back to Opus 4.8 on most biology and chemistry requests. This is intentional over-conservatism — Anthropic would rather cast too wide a net than launch unsafely. They acknowledge this causes some false positives and say they’ll tighten the classifier over the coming weeks.

Distillation Protection

Fable 5 includes a distillation-detection classifier to block adversaries from extracting model capabilities at scale to train competing models. This classifier also falls back to Opus 4.8 when triggered.

Data Retention

Both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 introduce a 30-day data retention policy — for safety monitoring only, never for training. Anthropic has added privacy protections: all human data access is logged, and data is deleted after 30 days (with rare exceptions).

I Had Fable 5 Build a Bookkeeping App From Scratch — It Was More Independent Than I Expected

I ran Fable 5 through a full day of testing. Here’s what happened on real tasks:

Coding: React Full-Stack App

I asked Fable 5 to build a full-stack React bookkeeping app with auth, a database, and a backend — starting from zero. It planned the project structure on its own, built the backend API in TypeScript first, then wrote the frontend components, then wired everything together. Halfway through, we hit a WebSocket connection bug. Fable 5 wrote its own test script, diagnosed the problem, and fixed it — something Opus 4.8 couldn’t do. The whole thing took about two hours, and I only had to intervene three times.

Compared to Opus 4.8, the biggest difference is Fable 5 doesn’t need hand-holding. Opus sometimes stops mid-task, waiting for you to confirm the direction. Fable 5 just keeps going, and checks its own work afterward.

Where It Tripped: Safety Classifier False Positive

It didn’t all go smoothly. I asked Fable 5 to analyze a Wired article about a zero-day vulnerability — legitimate security journalism, not an attack tutorial. If your work involves large codebases, complex analysis, or multi-step autonomous tasks, Fable 5’s premium is absolutely worth it. For daily chat, simple writing, and basic coding, Opus 4.8 is still solid — no rush to upgrade.

Where It Stumbles: False Positives, No Mythos 5 Access, Post-June-23 Pricing

  1. Classifier false positives: Anthropic says 95%+ of sessions are unaffected, but if you write about biology, chemistry, or cybersecurity, you’ll occasionally hit the fallback. Pain point for science writers and security content creators.
  2. Capacity limits: After June 23, Fable 5 leaves subscription plans and moves to usage credits. Anthropic hasn’t given a timeline for bringing it back.
  3. Mythos 5 is gatekept: If you need Mythos 5’s cybersecurity or biology capabilities, you’re stuck waiting for the trusted access program to expand.
  4. 30-day data retention: Enterprise customers with strict compliance requirements should have legal review the new policy.

Upgrade or Wait? Three Scenarios

Fable 5 left me conflicted. It absolutely demolishes Opus 4.8 on coding and long-document work. But the classifier false positives and the post-June-23 pricing model make it harder to give a blanket recommendation.

  • Buy: Your work involves large-scale coding projects, complex document analysis, or multi-step autonomous tasks. Fable 5’s premium is money well spent.
  • Wait: You mainly use Claude for writing, chatting, or simple translations. Opus 4.8 is enough. Let the classifier stabilize, then upgrade.
  • Don’t bother: You’re doing security research or bioinformatics. Fable 5’s classifiers will get in your way. Apply for Mythos 5 trusted access instead.

Mythos 5 is the iceberg beneath the surface. When Anthropic can safely unlock it — that’s the moment worth waiting for.
